The Charlotte Collection is a Versatile Family of Ranch Homes For Anyone & Everyone to Enjoy

The ranch home design has always been somewhat of a specialty for Robert Lucke Homes. Since 1953, we’ve been able to offer our customers some of the most iconic and award-winning ranch style floor plans on the market. Of all the custom homes in the Lucke archives, the original Charlotte floor plan rose quicker than most to the top of the stack.

The Charlotte, along with its descendants, remains today as perhaps our most popular and highly demanded floor plan in the company’s history.

Creating the Charlotte Ranch Home Design

The Charlotte began with the common theme of “open concept” for its shared great room/kitchen/dining room space. The breakfast area became the oversized island and the dining room moved to the area that was formerly the breakfast area, but was enlarged for a full size table.

Here’s what Randy LaMar, the primary creator of the original Charlotte plan, had to say about his popular ranch home design:

“In 2008, I noticed that no builders had this design, but our Lucke customers were calling for it in an attempt to be efficient and practical in the face of the housing bubble. With that in mind, I sketched the first Charlotte. Then it became a theme for all budgets and lifestyles, so we have versions of it starting at 1800sf up to 3200sf on the first floor. Some have 2 bedrooms and a study; some have 3 bedrooms and a study on the first floor; some have 3 bedrooms and no study. All versions can have any ceiling heights and/or custom ceiling designs. Basements are an option for all the plans for additional space.”

As is the theme with so many ideas that seem destined for mass appeal and popularity, the conception of the custom Charlotte ranch design was merely born out of a necessity at the time in the housing market. But no matter what lead to its creation, the Charlotte has more than proven its genius through multiple market cycles and major shifts in building and design trends over the years. It is the plan’s built-in versatility that has undoubtedly contributed to its longevity.

More Versatile Than Most Ranch Home Styles

We have a version at any square footage and the Charlotte themed layout has also grown into our two story custom home designs like the Moscato and Meritage.

The Charlotte floor plan is especially the theme for our Breckenridge first floor master which is, at its core, a Charlotte home with a second floor added. Many readers will remember our longtime Charlotte II model home in Reserves of Bethany off of Bethany Road in Mason (pictured below). In 2018, we introduced the Charlotte III – a slightly more compact reimagining of its ranch ancestors.

Conclusion

No matter how many forms the Charlotte takes, the key ingredient must remain – a highly functional and welcoming open first floor plan design that is equally perfect for entertaining guests and relaxing solo. It’s no wonder the original Charlotte ranch home design has become a staple of Lucke’s 67-year portfolio.
